SALIVA - NATURAL PROTECTION FOR THE ORAL CAVITY

Saliva is a remarkable, complex fluid with multiple functions. Research continuously reveals more about its essential role in the mouth’s natural defence against oral disease. Notably, saliva harbours a large panel of antimicrobial enzymes and proteins, including lysozyme, lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase, which control growth of bacteria and help maintain a balanced microbiome.

A downloadable summary pdf, written in collaboration with Anne Marie Pedersen from the University of Copenhagen, takes a closer look at this fascinating topic. The summary covers:

  • An overview of the components of saliva, including vital enzymes and proteins.
  • A look at the role of saliva in protection of the teeth and oral mucosa, via promoting the balance of bacteria in the mouth and protecting the teeth and gums.
  • Consideration of how approaches to supplement salivary enzymes and proteins could promote oral health by balancing the oral microbiome.
